Community Building
Concept
  • Community building is a field of practices directed toward the creation or enhancement of community between individuals within a regional area (such as a neighborhood) or with a common interest (that may or may not be limited to geographical boundaries).
  • Activists engaged in community-building efforts in industrialized nations see the apparent loss of community as a key cause of social disintegration and the emergence of many harmful behaviors. They may see building community as a means to increase social justice, individual well-being, and reduce negative impacts of otherwise disconnected individuals.
Trajectory
  • As a backlash against the trend toward individualization, new ways of community building are emerging. Much of this activity occurs on the Internet and Web 2.0 is an important carrier wave for this. On the Internet, this trend is rapidly maturing.
  • In real life, things are moving more slowly. There is an increased emphasis on participation in neighborhoods, gated communities in the USA being an extreme example of this. Community was also a key component of Obama’s Presidential campaign, concentrating on the sense of togetherness as encapsulated by the campaign slogan, “Yes, we can!”
  • Co-operation is also a central value for the more digitally connected Generation Y, who also tend to be more socially aware than their recent predecessors. As a result of this connection, societies can expect a greater level of social activism, with greater outreach across cultures and political parties.
