Intensive Lifestyles
Concept
  • The idea of intensive lifestyles relates to the work-life balance of a person and his or her control over the conditions in the workplace. It is accomplished when people feel dually satisfied about their personal life and their paid occupation. It mutually benefits the individual, business, and society when a person’s personal life is balanced with his or her own job. A phrase that brings the idea of work-life balance into focus is: ‘Work to live. Don’t live to work’.
  • However, this concept is not solely about intensity of the workplace. Personal life can also be very intensive, especially with the variety of ‘must-do’ private activities that are now available. Personal lives can also be very demanding!
Trajectory
  • For companies, there is a variety of tried and tested components to the work-life strategy. Foremost is the flexible working hours concept for employees, that can include a shorter or compressed working week as well as job sharing.
  • For employees, individuals who are seeking to improve their own worklife balance may:
    • Choose to work fewer hours, spending more time with their family.
    • Take on a different job role or title, typically with less pressure or responsibility and often for less remuneration.
    • Decide to give up working entirely, possibly becoming a ‘stay-athome’ mom or dad.
    • Work less, but at the same time make lifestyle choices―such as adopting a less consumerist approach―that requires less substantial outgoings.
  • A recent trend, and one perhaps boosted by the need to cut costs during the recession, is working from home. Employers are increasingly seeing this approach as a business necessity that yields great savings. Money is saved on travel, overheads, and subsistence, as well as the added bonus of creating carbon-free jobs.
