Cloud Computing
Concept
  • Cloud Computing is an evolving concept in which IT capabilities (a combination of connections, software, processing, and storage) are delivered to users as a service over public network (Internet) or private networks (Intranet).
  • A key element of Cloud Computing is that there is no need to know the underlying infrastructure. This underlying infrastructure becomes ‘the cloud’, where the services delivered are paid according to the amount a user consumes.
  • To provide the scalability and agility needed for the infrastructure, Cloud Computing service providers could make massive use of virtualization technologies.
  • In short, Cloud Computing is an alternative delivery and acquisition model in that anything and everything can be offered as a service (XaaS: Everything-as-a-Service).
  • Typically, Cloud Computing and its underlying terminology refers to elastic Internet resources that extend across other concepts like:
    • HaaS: Hardware-as-a-Service.
    • SaaS: Software-as-a-Service.
    • PaaS: Platfom-as-a-Service.
    • APaaS: Application Platform-as-a-Service.
    • AIaaS: Application Infrastructure-as-a-Service.
    • IaaS: Integration-as-a-Service.
Trajectory
  • The services Cloud Computing can offer organizations the potential to create considerable value in terms of scale, flexibility, reduction in the time-to-market, environmental efficiency, and reduction in capital expenditure.
  • As the ‘cloud’ evolves, organizations have to start identifying applications and experimenting with them while the vendors refine some problems regarding stability and security.
