Concept
The aim is to portray information in a way that is
easy to understand, so that users can focus on what is important to
them, presenting complex, multi-dimensional data in a visual format
using dimensions such as colour, size, and shape.
Data
visualisation is about getting the right information to the right
people at the right time, and about presenting less rather than more and
using graphics and colours to focus attention where it is needed most.
Trajectory
The
maturity of vendors varies greatly in their ability to provide a wide
array of visualisation options beyond just pie, bar, and line charts.
Advanced systems also allow data to be explored interactively.
Data
visualisation helps organisations to cope with both the increasing
amounts of information available and the growing shortage of time to
analyse it.
It is possible to uncover insights within the data
through identifying patterns. This might not be possible if the data was
not presented visually.
Interactive visualisation includes the
use of heat maps, geographic maps, link charts, and provides a broad
spectrum of special purpose visualisations. Increasingly, this fourth
feature will become a differentiator among vendors.
For global
projects with language issues, visuals are more effective for
communication than words.
