Nanotechnology
Concept
  • Nanotechnology is a popular term from the 1980s used to describe working in the realms of the molecule. This is not to be confused with the original meaning from the late 1950s, which referred to construction from the bottom up at the atomic level.
  • One nanometer is equivalent to one millionth of a millimeter.
Trajectory
  • This new level allows for ever-smaller devices to be developed and allows much more controlled manipulation of atoms. Whereas today our manufacturing processes transform matters in an uncontrolled way (on the atomic level), nanotechnology will allow a fine-grained and tailored approach to transforming matter by rearranging the atoms within it.
  • Nanotechnology has played its part in Moore’s Law (which states that the number of transistors on a circuit doubles every two years) and has allowed hardware manufacturers to increase the capabilities and performance of their hardware.
  • It is expected to enable the creation of products that are lighter, stronger, higher performing, and of course, smaller.
