Pace of Technological Change
Concept
  • Technologies today are advancing at a far quicker pace than ever before. Consumers, particularly Generation Y, are used to using more and more sophisticated technologies as part of their everyday lives. Government policy, society, and economics will determine which technologies advance the quickest. Current focus is on green, mobile, collaboration and cost-saving technologies.
Trajectory
  • Technology will continue to advance at an ever-quickening pace.
  • Step changes will occur when multiple technologies which are mutually compatible emerge at the same time—as happened with Web 2.0.
  • Web 3.0 will bring the next step change on the Internet, with wireless-enabled pervasive computing bringing a step change to our everyday lives.
  • Technology is everywhere, but in the future we will be even more dependent on it than we are today. As such, it will be granted more focus and so evolve more rapidly.
  • As change is happening faster than ever before, organizations need to be looking to harvest a larger crop of ideas to keep up with the pace of change. Open Innovation enables organizations to do this encouraging organizations to seek inspiration from a wider ecosystem that includes partners, customers, and peers. It will also help organizations to understand that they don’t have to invent something to get value from it. It is often the best business model that brings in the most revenue, and not the idea itself.
