Semantic Web
Concept
  • The Semantic Web is a term coined by Tim Berners-Lee to describe a new era of machine communication in which data is more understandable by machines.
  • “...an extension of the current Web in which information is given welldefined meaning, better enabling computers and people to work in co-operation.” - Tim Berners-Lee, James Hendler, Ora Lassila.
  • Also referred to as Web 3.0 or the ‘Contextual Web’, the Semantic Web is a combination of different technologies - Web 2.0, semantic technologies and SOA. Semantic Web will add meaning to data, driving a computer’s understanding of that data, so it can do intelligent search, reasoning, and combining.
  • It will take some time until this is fully realized, although niche applications are becoming available.
Trajectory
  • Search engines will be able to better understand the context of information and the context in which the user requires the information (Semantic Search Engine).
  • Pieces of information can be glued together and deductions made and exchanged with other programs, giving a bigger scope for small, diverse pieces of information.
  • Systems, data, and people will work together and process information from diverse sources.
  • Tailoring of information particular to audiences, contexts, and devices will enable agents to carry out sophisticated tasks.
  • Machines will process information that they can now only display, providing benefits that are difficult to measure at present.
  • Applications include anything that requires information to be gathered from many sources, deductions to be made and processed, producing a result that may need to be shared across systems.
