Sensors and Tracking
Concept
  • In manufacturing, traceability is all about keeping up-to-date records that link products or ingredients from supplier through the supply chain to the customer. It also includes all the stages of product creation. Formerly, a paper-based approach was taken, but increasingly technology is being installed to update and store records electronically.
  • Sensors will be used to automatically detect items at each stage so that their status and lifecycle can be recorded.
Trajectory
  • Retailers and legislators are leaning on manufacturers to install technology that will have complete traceability right down through the supply chain.
  • Barcoding has been a popular method of identifying objects, but simple barcodes are purely identifying labels. Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) is becoming more popular.
  • Being able to effectively and efficiently recall a product will benefit the consumer, by ensuring that any potential safety issues are dealt with swiftly, and the manufacturer, by ensuring that necessary batches are recalled.
  • Should RFID mandates be rolled out by retailers to suppliers in support of this, those manufacturers that have a tracing system in place would have an immediate advantage.
