Concept
Designates the many mobile devices (smart phones,
tablets, netbooks, portable game systems) which enable users to run
powerful, user-friendly applications and access the Internet from
(nearly) anywhere.
Enabled by the conjunction of wireless
ubiquity (3G, Wi-Fi available in main places of usage), unlimited data
plans, and powerful System on Chips.
Trajectory
The
power of the web has become available from nearly anywhere, and is
enhanced by context-aware applications making use of both locally
acquired data such as location and presence, or environmental data
(through various data capture technologies such as bar codes, OCR,
Bluetooth, NFC / RFID, zigbee) and data / services available from the
network.
Benefits for the general public (who can afford the
devices and data plans) are a smarter life, better ability to manage
their personal and professional life, access to entertainment (music,
videos, books, e-zines, games) anywhere, ability to make sense of the
environment even when it’s unknown, through location-based services and
augmented reality, and ability to create and publish content in a
continuous flow of information and opinions (social media). Risks
include ‘info-addiction’ (the tendency to lose oneself in the infinite
mass of data and possibilities available), locking into closed
ecosystems (through pre-installed, unique application / media stores)
and loss of privacy (entrusting a single actor with every personal
data).
Benefits for the enterprise are bigger agility and better
implementation of business process thanks to push mail, enterprise
unified communications and mobile business applications. Mobile business
dashboards will enable real-time operational monitoring and reaction.
